JUNG, CROP CIRCLES &
the RE-EMERGENCE OF THE ARCHETYPAL FEMININE
"A tremendous achievement! Clear, lucid and comprehensive."~ Anne Baring author of The Myth of the Goddess
"Your book is permission not to have the answer . . . Until now, I've been pushing against having to know, categorize, etc... But after reading your book, I feel I can just forget about cultural prescriptions and cut loose." ~ M.B., Pasadena
Sparked by their curiosity, thousands of people have contributed to the study of Crop Circles around the world. Individuals throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United States and elsewhere have given their time freely to the documentation of this phenomenon. They have measured, marked, photographed, and taken the samples that constitute an abundant archive of data from which we may now seek to draw our own conclusions. As a researcher, I have been delighted to discover the wealth of materials on the physical science and mythological context of the Crop Circle phenomenon that they have collected. My contribution is consequently built upon the product of their efforts.
Amongst the many who have contributed to the investigation of this phenomenon there are very few who would claim to have found the answer to its mystery. I am proud to count myself among them. This work is an attempt–only–to sketch a framework for deeper consideration of the question of Crop Circles. If you are looking for an answer, or a solution to this phenomenon’s riddle, best to look elsewhere. At best, I hope to offer only a direction, a route by which to begin tracking something very elusive (yet that seemingly wants us to follow it). For all those who have engaged with this phenomenon for some time, it is a source of deepening wonder and it is to that experience that you are invited.
In historical documents dating from 16th century England to 1970’s Saskatchewan, Canada, people have recorded their observations of Crop Circles. Prior to the explosion of this phenomenon in the last twenty-five years, and ever since, people’s reports chronicle their efforts to witness what they saw. Those who have encountered the phenomenon have chosen to study it, following their curiosity, and in response to their own felt interest, honoured their own inner compulsion.
I strongly believe that the significance of this phenomenon is available to all of us and that engagement with it should not be reserved from anyone; it challenges us all and is open to us all. However, this subject does introduce readers to ideas that may be new to them, it brings up wide categories of thought and poses broad questions–questions that stretch the imagination and our preconceptions. Answering these questions necessitates a labour on the part of those interested in it.
Primarily, I believe that this subject asks of its investigators (of which you now are one) a more actively engaged participation–not a simple reading–but a ‘dance for two’. Each of us responds differently to new things in general and whether we bring to this topic a skeptical brow or a wide-eyed enthusiasm, we do not come to it empty-handed. It is in the nature of how we engage with our own first responses to this phenomenon that I believe the burden of our work in response to it lies. Meeting this task involves a willingness to play with our own responses, to be in process with them, rather than attaching and identifying with our own initial reaction. I have yet to meet two people who feel exactly the same way about Crop Circles, and I have also found that, over time, our engagement with the facts and theories that surround them changes and deepens. Given time and place this labour yields its own fruit for each of us. Tending to this harvest begins by resisting identification with our first reactions to this material, an effort which is made easier by accompanying your reading of this text with giving value to your own thoughts. This is best done by writing them down or playing with them imaginatively if you have time to ponder them. Write down your own responses as you read these materials or look at Crop Circle photographs. Your own first responses are often the most valuable here. Flashes of response, no matter how brief, offer the possibility of glimpsing something within us that is truly fresh and genuinely new. Participation in this engagement brings a mirror to the new possibilities inherent within us, hosting what is evoked by the phenomenon.
"Both psychologically grounded and open to the inspiring awe of this new wonder, Bobroff's approach is one that is accessible to everyone and no prior exposure to Jung or Crop Circles is require."
~ Dr. KD Farris, author of MESHE, HESHE, MISON & ORBIT
"Unflinchingly intelligent! Vital and important. Original, insightful and resonant with hope. You fearlessly acknowledge the deep mystery inherent in the Crop Circle phenomenon and gently offer a way for people to absorb, accept and understand."
~ Laura Ferguson, Director, College of the Melissae — Sacred Beekeeping School, Ashland, OR
I'm very proud to let you know that on January 21st, 2013 I signed a contract to publish "Jung, Crop Circles & the Re-Emergence of the Archetypal Feminine" with North Atlantic Books. The book will come out next spring and will be distributed by Random House (which seems appropriate ;) )
The book will remain essentially the same as it is now. There will be an editorial clean-up and a re-written introduction and a new foreword, but they really like the book as it is and they understand what I was going for. As the publisher said to me today, I subtly lead the reader toward fully receiving the question for themselves. I'm proud to hear that kind of praise and to have that as a goal well-achieved.
North Atlantic has a fiercely independent history and has been supporting this kind of writing since its inception. I'm proud to be a part of their literary family. For more on them see: www.northatlanticbooks.com (for a full description of their history from the publisher's point of view, see here).
I would also very much like to thank Andrew Harvey for his passionate advocacy on my behalf (see: http://www.andrewharvey.net/). Thank you Andrew! My next work, "The Archetypes of the Feminine & Masculine" to be co-authored with Dr. KD Farris, will most likely also be published by North Atlantic as a part of Andrew's Sacred Activism series.
I also want to thank you those of you who have been particularly supportive of me in my work toward this goal—thank you: KD Farris, Janice Kalec, Shirley & Paul Paukulis, Sarah Stevenson, Shannon O'Neill, Marguerite Cummings & Suzanne Taylor and the many of more of you that have received me and my work with open minds and hearts.

"The way he integrated the science and phenomon of crop circles with the deep mystery and symbolic (depth) meaning of what's going on in our culture both individually and collectively was deeply touching and profound." Bonnie Bright, founder, Depth Psychology Alliance
"Gary's presentation was moving and thought provoking -- taking me beyond the automatic responses to eerie phenomena that seek to explain them rather than to open to experiencing them...being effected and changed by them. I glimpsed what it might be like to stand in a crop circle and allow myself to enter its world, and to have my visceral comprehension of the ensouled matter of the cosmos deepened -- altered. " Rebecca P.
"Gary's a gem. His presentation overflowed with wisdom and love for the wonder of psyche and the unique role depth psychology plays in the healing of our injured world. I left the evening inspired and touched and re-energized." Dennis P.
